The one metric most pet ecommerce brands ignore

By Emily Hughes · 5 min read · UX & Conversion

Most pet ecommerce dashboards are built around first-purchase conversion rate — and it shows in how the site is designed, tested and optimised. But pet products are one of the most repeat-purchase-heavy categories in ecommerce, and the metric that actually predicts long-term revenue is repeat-order timing, not first conversion.

Why first-purchase conversion is the wrong headline metric

Food, litter, and flea or worming treatment all run out on a predictable cycle. A customer who converts once but never reorders on schedule is worth a fraction of one who reorders reliably every 4-6 weeks. Optimising only for that first sale — the metric every dashboard highlights by default — misses where the real value sits.

What repeat-order timing actually tells you

Tracking the gap between a customer's expected reorder date and when they actually reorder (or don't) surfaces problems no conversion-rate chart will show: a reminder email landing too late, a subscribe-and-save option that's hard to find, or packaging that doesn't make the "how much is left" question obvious.

A pet ecommerce brand that wins the first sale but loses the second one is running a much smaller business than its traffic numbers suggest.

The fixes are mostly about timing, not persuasion

Measure it even if you can't fix it yet

Even without changing anything, simply tracking on-time reorder rate as a headline metric — alongside first-purchase conversion, not instead of it — changes what a team notices and prioritises. It's usually the fastest way to find real revenue that's currently leaking out quietly, order by order.

If your analytics setup can't currently answer "what percentage of customers reorder within their expected window," that's the first gap worth closing — before any new landing page or checkout tweak.
